Checks and Balances

The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny. – James Madison

Our founding fathers took exquisite care to ensure that power not be concentrated in the hands of any one man. Rather they created three separate, but equal, branches of government. A system where executive power is shared with both legislative and judicial to form a single representative democracy.

Donald Trump is far from an original. In fact his type goes back so far even our founding fathers were quite familiar with his story. That intricate system of checks and balances that came to be know as American democracy. It was designed with Deranged Donald in mind.

Crafted to prevent the authoritarian narcissist who took no real positions from assuming absolute power. Designed to restrain those who held no real values or morals. Aware of the danger a legacy offspring of the privileged 1%, one who was placed at the top without ever attempting to experience or understand the struggles of those on the bottom, could pose to freedoms. Cognizant of the need to safeguard against the charismatic leader who rose to power on the backs of slogan, propaganda and alternative fact. Chiefly architected to defend democracy against the tyrannical figure; the one motivated solely by money, power and adoration. The one willing to make any fake promise, cut any deal or betray any ally so long as it advanced their own self interests.

Our founding fathers came of age under such leaders. They studied them in their history of the French, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and more. They cracked the code to deal with those who ruled through fear, intimidation and bravado. Those driven to squash dissent and opposition simply to protect their fragile ego and over compensate for their own small hands, I mean shortcomings. Our founders understood Donald Trump and swore to create a new system of governance to prevent such monarchs from ever succeeding in unilaterally controlling America’s shores again.

Everything we need to defeat Trump is at our fingertips. Provided for in the very system This merry bannon of deplorables hope to destroy. The foundation exists but it is up to the American people to apply its mechanisms. Insist those checks and balances are functioning properly. Complacency is not an option. We must prioritize action. Hold any and all to account who fail to do their job as an independent branch. Who fail to check and investigate our executive with the zealous extreme vetting appropriate for those who pose a clear and present danger to our national security interests.

Americans across both sides of the political spectrum have known for years that our Congress ceased functioning as an independent safeguard many years prior to our Comrade in Chief coming along. That through gerrymandering and voter suppression our representatives had brazenly prioritized party over people. If we truly want to make America great again it starts there. It’s time that our representatives stop being corporate shills and party whores and actually represent.

It’s no longer enough to simply voice your displeasure. We must insist on results. Make clear that those who continue to appease this snake will be considered complicit in his crimes. We need to limit further damage and potential infiltration of those who don’t have Americans best interest in mind. Insist that the Senate refuse to consider any future Trump nominations, Judicial appointees included, until we determine through complete and independent investigation that Donald Trump was truly hired by and working for the American people.

Soon after taking office as Trump’s Chief Advisor Steve Bannon stood before the Cons, Pricks and so-called Christians conference (CPAC) to boast that they intentionally nominate incompetents. Individuals chosen specifically to drive their respective agencies into extinction. We must not allow that to continue. In particular we must safeguard the independence of our judiciary. Our last bastion of independence. Our fiercest defender of liberty.

Protest. Make noise. Write. Call. Petition. Donate. Run for office. Vote. Show up to town halls to demand transparency. Make clear that those who choose to appease these snakes that slither through the halls of the White House will be considered complicit in his crimes.

If your Senator refuses your calls, ducks your town halls, or ignores your pleas and continues to confirm these unqualified yahoos. If they go on supporting this administration’s illegal orders unchallenged and refuse to investigate the thousands of red flags surrounding this merry bannon of deplorables. Then I encourage you to lend your voice to the resistance. Change your party affiliation to that of the opposition party or declare yourself an independent. I don’t care how you do it but get your message across. Until proven legitimate, anybody who supports this President must come to know they are not safe in their job.

Whatever color your district, if you oppose what this administration represents, know that you are in the majority. Read up on the words of our founders. They foresaw this too. We, the people, were envisioned as the final frontier. The ultimate check to prevent the rise of despotism. Take solace in their words and foresight. We’ve been here before.

The Pathway to Perdition

The pathway to perdition is paved in ignorance. They say there are only seven original stories in the world. If you read enough, and pay attention to life, you can actually begin to see them unfold in realtime. You grow able to predict what the author of that real life story is going to do next. Which story they seek to recreate in their own life.

Donald Trump is far from an original. In fact we’re all familiar with this story he’s writing. For many of us it’s our favorite movie, book or television show. We’ve seen it unfold countless times, albeit in differing variations.

The agents of fear and oppression rise up, usually in the form of a privileged older male pseudo populist whose good fortune depends on preserving the status quo. He uses fear and oppression as his primary tools. His speech comprised of thinly veiled dog whistles that call upon the deplorables of society to rise up. His policies implicitly condone the dirty work and agenda of those who once sat on the fringe of society.

His nationalistic rhetoric encourages them to sow discord; to intimidate others to get on board. to bully, peer pressure, threaten and blackmail similar patriots and relatives who may agree with the message but be resistant to the harsh methods. Over time they too will join the cause or face excommunication from the party. Those branded race or party traitors to be forever blacklisted and cast out.

As he consolidates power the narcissist grows. He begins to divide traditional alliances through rumor, false promises and chaos. He discredits opponents with lies, misinformation and alternative facts.

As the story progresses the emerging authoritarian begins to act more erratic. The threat of a “deep state”, and traditional checks and balances begin to weigh heavy on he who chases the crown.

As the opposition grows and coalesces, the motive of the dictatorial villain grows more transparent. The desire for ultimate power drive increasingly brutal and more brazen tactics. Dissent must be suppressed! Foreign enemies abound! A caravan of rapists and criminals approach unchecked! Now is not the time for #resistance!

Midway through the story a cataclysmic event occurs. The stuff of nightmares. A society’s worst fears realized. Freedoms must be restrained as a new threat rises. At this point resistance is futile. The takeover complete.

That’s the story Trump and his caravan of the corrupt are trying to write. The appointment of Whitaker. The war on the press and needless taunts of our closest allies. It’s clear that we’re already very close to that midway point.

There’s another version of this story though. The one written about the protagonist. A story of hope, freedom and perseverance. How love saves the day. A last minute miracle. A heroic act that thwarts catastrophy and exposes the naked emperor, unmasks the fraud.

In that story truth, justice and the “American” way win out. “We, the people,” can still write that story. Look around, look around. The resistance is real. We are the majority. We simply need that hero to step forward to lead us

Either way; the good news is the story always ends the same way. Love, empathy, sacrifice and acceptance win the day. A new hope emerges in the blooms of renewed unity and tolerance. The villain is denounced and rejected. Grows to be nothing more than a cautionary tale in history’s annals.

I’ve read this book a thousand times. Societies advance, grow more civil and tolerant.

The question is not if freedom wins. It’s how long and at what cost it will take for her to do so. Progress knows but one direction #Forward

The Gaslighting of America

The gaslighting of America continues. Peer past the latest tweetstorms and staged drama orchestrated to distract you from reality. At heart our Donald Trump is a reality show star. It’s the only thing he’s ever been really good at. Scripting fake storylines and passing it off as reality. Manufacturing drama and faux conflict by introducing alternative facts and other stressors designed to produce outlandish sound bites and bombastic over exaggerated reactions to everyday situations. Carefully editing select moments of a person’s most vulnerable moments to create archetypical characters. Misrepresenting them in order to make a show entertaining to the masses. Keep them coming back for more. There’s no denying he knows how to spin a good yarn, keep people talking.

Not only that he has the perfect temperament for it. He holds no real convictions or loyalties and is convincingly able to take any position necessary to advance a storyline. Cross whatever line so long as it furthers his own agenda. A literal caricature of every villain of every film ever made. A billionaire product of affluent affirmative action who sells himself as a man of the people. A self proclaimed tycoon who was placed directly at the top of the business pyramid; never understanding what it means to actually lead. To advance on merit, not name. Able to skip the lessons of middle management the man has never learned the virtues of empathy, humility, accountability and communication.

My fellow Americans, we need to wake up and stop reacting to the newest scandal being scripted by this White House. Tune out the latest episode and ignore the narratives being pushed by this merry bannon of deplorables. Change the channel and end this shit show.

Tune back into the American story instead. The one piloted by our founding fathers nearly 250 years ago. Pitched on hope, equality, opportunity, freedom and in building a better tomorrow. Rooted in resistance to intolerance and hate. Understand that story is now in danger of cancellation. Only a coordinated campaign by “we, the people” will guarantee its renewal #Resist #TheResistance

A Terrorist By Any Other Name

It’s easy to blame Muslim leaders for the rise of terrorism. To point out the hypocrisy of Imams and Islamic leaders for their refusal to use the full power of their positions to condemn those fundamentalists who commit horrific acts in the name of their God and prophets. To demand they do no more to convince the world that Islam is not a violent religion. That the misguided acts of a few are not representative of the whole.

America has a similar problem. Our standing as leader of the free world, the land of hopes and dreams and beacon of freedom for the world’s oppressed and under privileged is fading. It’s time for our leaders to recognize the rise of white Christian domestic terrorists. A fundamental sect comprised primarily of disgruntled youth who bastardize the words of God, Jesus and our founding fathers to justify their own acts of violence and deplorable behavior.

For years our leaders have more or less ignored this growing threat. Rather than condemn and stigmatize the larger group we have excused their behaviors as the acts of a lone wolf, a disturbed and misguided individual or other one off. Of course nothing could be further from the truth. These repeated attacks are all connected to a larger movement. A confederacy of hate and white supremacy that preys on the outcasts and piranhas of our society. They rely on conspiracy theory, fear and alternative facts to connect with the fringes of society who otherwise lack a voice. They use tried and true methods of organized dogma, scape goats, propaganda and slogan to radicalize new members. They encourage recruits to arm themselves with military grade arsenals and practically dare them to try out their new toys on the deep state and liberal elites who seek to prevent their ascension.

The time has come for Americans to protect their standing in the world. To make clear that this group of radical domestic terrorists do not define this great nation or her people. We are the land of the free and home of the brave. Let’s act it. The time has come to call out and differentiate the majority of us from those who now seek to change our identity. Who wish to hit a pause on the progress button and redefine a once great nation’s values and ideals.

The Boiling Frog

According to lore if you place a frog into a pot of boiling water it will jump right out and escape its impending doom. If, however, the frog is put into a pot of warm water and then brought to a slow boil it will not perceive of the danger until it’s too late. The poor frog is cooked to death.

The lesson of the story isn’t found in the frog’s death, but in its life. It’s that the frog never thought to escape. It was always just a hop away from freedom but chose to remain passive. Why? Because it couldn’t even perceive of the danger that lay ahead. Welcome to America’s democracy.

The warning signs are all there. From the inept Cabinet picks and partisan judicial nominations. To the war on the free press and creation of Sean Hannity’s Ministry of Propaganda. To the reckless wag the dog foreign policy. To the manufactured inquiry into Obama’s deep state. Deranged Donald has done more to destroy our democratic institutions, strip away individual freedoms and erode our standing as the beacon of hope and freedom to the world’s oppressed and underprivileged than any modern American leader.

Moreover, the majority of us understand that there is more to this Russia story. That Deranged Donald craves nothing more than power, adoration and fortune and will go to any lengths to protect his legacy, his bank account and family name. That he acts as if compromised by Putin in everything from his repeated refusal to implement sanctions, to his hiring of Flynn and Manafort, to his flagrant obstruction, to his shady real estate dealings, to his passing along of classified information, to the secret meetings, to the tipping them off of impending military operations, all the way to the outright refusal to directly say anything negative about his Puppetmaster Putin.

Put aside that alone may mean he has de facto command of the two most powerful military forces the world has ever known. That he will never permit the liberal witch hunt to end in his removal from office. Consider only what we know instead. That Russia continues to actively promote his agenda through misinformation campaigns on social media and by actively seeking to interfere in our midterm elections. That American intelligence is aware of this activity. That our so called President has done absolutely nothing about it! Why may that be? Might it be that a free and fair election may not be in his best interest. That the thought of a Democrat controlled House alone keeps him up at night with worry that the naked Emperor will be exposed. It’s the one contingency he must not allow.

It’s time for the majority to wake up. Do not allow past experiences to lull you into a false sense of security. The water is getting mighty warm. It’s time to jump out. Recognize what is at stake. Traditional checks and balances do not apply to unconventional threats.

We cannot afford to sit back passively and wait for a long off Election Day to voice our displeasure. The stakes are too high and the future too nebulous. We need our citizens to engage in bold and direct action. National strikes, sit-ins, daily demonstrations and other disruptive but non-violent methods are required. We need to leave our comfort zones and make proactive sacrifice. The freedoms we take for granted can literally be wiped away with a stroke of a pen; an impulsive tweet, or the push of a button.

Where were they radicalized

More people have died in schools than military service members in 2018. The Santa Fe High School massacre was the 22nd school terror attack this year.

31,000 Americans are victims of gun violence each year.

More than 188,000 students have been exposed to gun violence at school since Columbine.

Let’s be clear. America has a domestic terrorism problem. We must confront that fact with the same urgency we rightfully demand of Muslim leaders. Whether we like it or not, the threat is similar. A once fringe fanatical minority of the population uses horrific acts of violence to gain recognition. Begins to disproportionately represent the greater whole.

While sensible gun control and the means to prevent these terrorists from gaining access to weapons of mass destruction is part of the solution, it is not the whole solution. As a society, we also need to take a hard look at what drove each new perpetrator to commit such heinous acts. What would motivate these overwhelming number of young, white, males to have such a blatant disregard for human life. We need to ask ourselves, “where were they radicalized?”

Interventions are messy so let’s start off with some basic housekeeping. Perception is not reality and our leaders, regardless of party, have a responsibility to shape perception to match reality. The truth sometimes hurts to hear. That doesn’t mean we ignore it. That means speaking truth regardless of personal consequence. In other words, you may hate me for what I’m about to say, but I’m going to say it anyway.

So let me put this out there. This has nothing to do with politics. Look at Donald Trump’s words. Log into twitter and review his timeline of tweets. It is repulsive. You’d be ashamed of your child if that was the method they used to become class President let alone leader of the free world. Behavior matters. Over time a team’s culture begins to take on the personality of its leader. The same is true of our country. For some time our politicians have sought to divide this country’s people. Define and separate us into red or blue camps, liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican. Networks and news media devoted to one side or the other.

In recent years this tendency to divide and insulate the electorate has reached dangerous heights. People automatically placed into “us” and “them” camps as Chris Christie so famously did in the 2012 RNC convention. Donald Trump himself escalating the rhetoric as leader of the unconscionable birther moment. The opposition no longer portrayed as reasonable politicians with whom the goal is compromise, but as unAmerican enemies of the people. The goal no longer to reach a deal but to “crush,” bury,” and “own” the opposition.

When you dehumanize people, treat them as less than human. When you use your platform to characterize people who live within our shores as “animals,” as unworthy of the basic inalienable rights bestowed upon all men, you create a culture of indifference. You birth a generation that is losing the ability to empathize. That sees targets and avatars in their crosshairs rather than sons and daughters. You create an expectation of violence and bloodshed. You spit on the vision of our founding fathers and blasphemy the words of our Declaration of Independence. The essential truths set forth therein.

When you draw false equivalents between those who protest for equality and freedom with those who represent hatred and ignorance. Who use tiki torches and strap assault rifles to their bodies to intimidate and snuff out those who seek progress. When you see the good in klansmen, neo-Nazis and white supremacists you give voice to the fringe of society. You enable their message of hate and violence. Allow those who hate for other reasons, who feel excluded, isolated and left out to rationalize their desires.

When you bow to the statues of confederate soldiers, display the hate filled flag on your pick up truck, and conflate the history of the Confederacy with that of the United States you deny the American dream. When you name call, cyberbully, race bait and shame people based on their looks you encourage our kids to do the same. To separate themselves from those they don’t like and humiliate them for it. When a pro- life agenda only includes the unborn, the living become expendable.

We reap what we sow. This is not a problem that can be prayed away. There are no alternative facts. The time for cognitive dissonance, for denial, is past. Save us the hypocrisy of lowering your flags to half mast. In fact, raise them Stars and Stripes high and proud instead. This is America! This is what we’ve come to accept as normal.

This is what we will remain until we elect leaders who understand, who as a nation we were founded to be. Who lead with the knowledge that the American identity exists. That the vast majority of us want the same things. That we share so many more values in common than we do ideas that tear us apart. That there is no “us” or”them”, “red” or “blue.”

From shore to shore America is comprised of Republicans, Democrats and Independents, young and old, Muslim, Christian, Jews, atheists and other, Irish, Italian, Asian, African, European and Native, scientists and clergy, gun enthusiasts and gun control advocates, men and women. We are the great melting pot. That diversity IS the American identity. We can’t change that anymore than a tiger can change its stripes. A list of all the great contributions immigrants and refugees have made to this country would dwarf a list of their misdeeds a million times over.

To solve school violence, immigration, terrorism, or even the opioid epidemic requires we all respect multiple views and ideas. It requires a change in Washington, DC. An understanding that we are a nation built on compromise, trust and acceptance. It requires leaders who lead by example. Like all problems, it will first require acknowledgment. The willingness of the people to accept that we have a problem and the courage to confront it
